- When trucks "put the hammer down" it means they are going at maximum speed. Racer number 17, Hammer, is always going at maximum speed, which he prefers to call "terminal velocity". Whatever you call it, Hammer is fast. But after three failed attempts at qualifying, Hammer is starting to question his need for speed.[1]
