Murray Clutchburn was a stock race car that lived in the United States. He started his sports career as a member of the 1984 gold-winning Olympics relay race team. At the time, his image was put on specially marked boxes of Wheelies Shredded Brakes. His successes at the Olimpics carried him into mainstream professional racing career in the Piston Cup Racing Series where he would race for Sputter Stop team with number 92. His team transporter was Dan Haulin'. During his races, he would sometimes perform his signature exhaust side-burn, that, back in his early years made him a hit with the female fans.

In 2006 he competed in Dinoco 400 race at the the Motor Speedway of the South, Motor City, United States, which was the final race of the Piston Cup season. During the race, he took part in an accident between almost all of the competitors that was caused by Chick Hicks, during which he ended up on his roof and got slammed by Ralph Carlow. He was able to continue racing and finished the race.

He competed in Piston Cup series until 2016, when in the midseason, with the rise of popularity of the high-tech next-generation series of race cars, that had better achievements on the tracks, he got replaced by Sputter Stop team with Sheldon Shifter.

Trivia

  • Despite the die-cast release of the Sputter Stop veteran in Cars 3 being named "Murray Clutchburn", Murray resembles a third generation NASCAR vehicle, whereas the Cars 3 racer resembles either a fourth or fifth generation NASCAR vehicle. The same mistake happens with the die-cast releases of the Gasprin, Bumper Save, Spare Mint and Lil' Torquey Pistons racers from Cars 3, being mistaken for Floyd Mulvihill, Ponchy Wipeout, Ernie Gearson and Ralph Carlow. The racers in Cars 3 aren't similar to the Cars racers who raced for the same teams, thus meaning that the Cars racers either retired prior to Cars 3 or went through some sort of plastic surgery.
  • When Chick Hicks starts the "big one", he hits Winford Bradford Rutherford, who then hits Murray, but after the scene where Chick says "Get through that, McQueen!", James Cleanair is in Murray's place.
  • On Murray's die-cast, and in a scene, he is mistakenly depicted with red eyelids instead of green.
