Upon starting, racers will drive along a zigzagged straightaway, and into a banked right turn. This leads the racers over a short jump and another turn, where they have the option of two different paths, each of the same length. When the paths connect, the competitors drive over another short jump, down another straightaway, and through another turn. After a few more lefts and rights, the racers will return to the finish line.
Since cars cross the same straightaway twice in two directions, they sometimes have head-on collisions with each other, usually when they are 8 to 13 seconds apart, this usually only happens on Rookie difficulty, but less skilled players can use this at their advantage since Emma usually gets far enough ahead of Lewis and Fred that she can be pushed into them.
In the Wii and PS3 versions of the game, the starting line positions are different, where the player starts in the back and the car that usually places 4th (Judd in story mode) starts in the front.
Although Emma competes in this event, she is not playable in any of the Rustbucket Races. Lightning McQueen and Mater are the only playable characters in the Rustbucket Races.
Sometimes when a car gets reset in this event, usually at the two-way intersection, they will flash invisible although their dust trail can still be seen, and they are impenetrable to opponents and obstacles.
